NIGERIA:Group Urges FGN to Develop Agric Sector

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on the Federal Government to improve on the Agric sector to guarantee food self – sufficiency and food security in this New Year 2020.

The chairman of AFAN, Lagos State Mr. Femi Oke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while reviewing the sector’s 2019 accomplishment and stating expectations for the sector in 2020.

Mr. Oke speaking on behalf of AFAN commended the Federal Government for the advancements observed in some important Agricultural value chains in 2019. He said that the prolonged closure of the Nigerian Land Borders has resulted positively, adding that there is growth in farm produce across all major value chains stating that poultry farmers, aquaculture farmers, and rice farmers received more orders and were fully patronized in 2019. There was development in the sector in 2019 on some farm products like poultry produce and crops like grains, rice, and others.

The Chairman noted that there are many expectations from the Government in ensuring that suitable environments are created for farming, which include extension service support, finance, provision of farm inputs and equipment, security, and regular training on new development in the sector.

He said that if all these can be made available by the Government, Nigerians should believe there will be an improvement in Agric Sector in 2020 as regards food security and adequacy in the Country.

Mr. Oke also used the medium to call on Nigerians to endeavor to purchase homegrown goods and avoid calling Nigeria product local product, he added that there is nothing like the local product because every community and country have its homegrown produce.

The AFAN Chairman also pleaded to private investors to utilize opportunities in the sale of farming machinery for the continuation of the development observed in the Agric Sector in 2019.

Moreover, he said that the Government did not set high taxes and import duties on machinery and equipment adding it would be a good opportunity for investors to influence the business opportunity.
